Janine wanted to keep her two cats contained in the backyard – but it was not going to be simple!

Her property had:

several types of fence

raised garden beds in front of fences

4 gates

2 outbuildings close to fences

a deck

lots of foliage to be trimmed
and…

a large tree near one fence (and it had to stay)

Fortunately, we are able to recommend the very versatile Purrfect Fence system, including:

Purrfect Fence Standard Height System on her tall fences (at least 1.8m high)

Purrfect Fence Low Fence System on the lower fences (such as those with garden beds in front), and

A little bit of Purrfect Fence Freestanding System to do a small detour around her favourite tree (see top photo).

All three systems use the patented Purrfect Fence arm with pivoting joint, and they link together to form a continuous cat barrier.

“After losing two cats to road accidents, I got in touch with Neil to see if it was possible to cat proof my backyard,” says Janine.

“Neil was very helpful and prompt with communication. He drew up an amazing plan for my fairly large, complex yard. The product was sent down from Auckland to Wellington and I was happy with the price and quality. The fencing has been installed by my builder and I am over the moon with the result. The cat fencing looks surprisingly low profile and blends well with my black fencing. My two cats are loving having the outdoor space to explore and I am enjoying the back doors open with peace of mind that they are safe. Thank you so much Neil, this has been a game changer.”

We often hear from people with large backyards, wondering how they can create a safe area for cats – without breaking the bank.

We hear you, pets are expensive enough!

One way to reduce costs is to consider whether your cats need access to the entire backyard, or whether a smaller area within the yard would be sufficient – or might even be better.

Such an area can be created using the Purrfect Fence Freestanding System, as shown above.

The Freestanding System has other advantages too:

if your boundary fences are not very high, or are in poor condition, you’ll avoid the cost of bringing them up to standard for a fence-mounted system

if you have trees near the fences, or things like raised gardens, sheds or clotheslines, you can exclude these potential escape routes

this sort of catio makes it easier to spend time with your cats, and you can easily enrich it to create a cat playground that you and your cats will want to spend time in

the rest of your yard can remain available for other activities with no need to worry about cats finding a way out, such as when gates are opened or visitors arrive for a BBQ

When it comes to cat-proofing your yard, sometimes less is more!

Another question we often hear is: “Will I be able to remove a freestanding system if I move to a new home?”

The answer is yes; when installing the ground sleeves you should leave a bit of them showing above the surface. You can then pull them out if necessary.

Check out our range of Purrfect Fence Freestanding Kits, including Heavy Duty and Light Duty Gates. If you have special requirements, let us know, and we may be able to create a custom kit for you.

Purrfect Fence is one of the easiest cat containment systems to install and it’s ideal if you have a mixture of fence types, or different fence heights, on your property.

There are three types of Purrfect Fence:

Standard Height (for fences at least 1.6m tall)

Low Fence (for fences 1.0-1.6m tall)

Freestanding (for use when there’s no existing fence)

One of the great things about these three solutions, is that they all have the same patented arm at the top, so they can be used in all sorts of combinations.

In the photo above, a Heavy Duty Gate is installed in a short run of Freestanding Purrfect Fence to enclose the side yard. Notice how it neatly joins up with the Purrfect Fence Standard Height System installed along the top of the timber fence..

Purrfect Fence has now been available in New Zealand for one year, and we celebrated that anniversary with our biggest installation so far, an 82-metre long project at the NZ Cat Foundation sanctuary in Auckland.

The NZCF cares for unwanted cats and kittens in a spacious rural setting and we were delighted when they chose to have us work with them on upgrading one of their two enclosures.

This “cat corral”, measuring 35 metres by 6 metres, had a chicken wire roof and lots of partitions. It was hard for the NZCF volunteers to move about easily, and trimming the many olive trees was almost impossible due to the low roof which was sagging and had developed a few gaps.

On Monday 8 January we got an early start, and here’s a look at how things went:

“Who’s that coming? Oh, it’s just that guy from catfence.nz.”

“You’re not going to make us move out of the way, are you?”

Even though the fence is 2m tall, we used the Low Fence arms to gain extra height because there are several items within the enclosure from which a cat could jump. At the far left, you can see a different type of cat fencing installed several years go on the adjacent enclosure. Unlike Purrfect Fence, that system does not have a spring-loaded horizontal arm at the top.

On these arms the Purrfect Fence poly mesh has been attached to the spring-loaded arms, and is looking very tidy. The poly mesh is the same material used in deer fencing, with a 600-lb breaking strength!

Here the installation is almost finished, and the olive trees have been trimmed. The enclosure is now open to the sky and volunteers arriving for the afternoon shift were excited to see this tidier and more open area.

Happy customers. Or at least happy that we were finished and they could get back to sleep. 🙂

Our thanks go to Anne, Tracey and Michael from the NZCF for their great work in rescuing cats and for helping get this Purrfect Fence installation complete. Here’s a video tour of the sanctuary, before the addition of Purrfect Fence:

Sometimes, inset fence posts, such as the ones you can see in this photograph, can be a challenge for cat-proofing, but Purrfect Fence handles them easily.

As a rule-of-thumb, Purrfect Fence brackets are installed on the innermost surfaces of a fence – in this case on the posts. Then the poly mesh is secured around the posts and onto the fence.

Rory installed Purrfect fence at his home in Christchurch last month. Afterwards, he told us:

“The springs were far more powerful and sturdy than I’d expected. Overall, it’s a very tidy solution, pretty easy to install and far better than the temporary net I’d strung up last year on wires between the soffit & fence!”

New Zealand fences are seldom simple. Our hilly terrain means fences are often stepped, as in the photo here, or sloped.

With Purrfect Fence, that’s no problem at all. The height of each arm can be set to provide a smooth top line for the cat containment system, regardless of the steps or varying slope in the fence.

Purrfect Fence is so versatile, in fact, it even works on very low fences (as low as 1 metre).

The Purrfect Fence system shown here was purchased from us recently and installed at an Auckland home.

Where can we ship to?

We can ship some small items (see list below) anywhere in New Zealand.

For larger items, we can only ship to non-rural addresses on the North Island or South Island. In other words we cannot ship larger items to rural addresses or to other islands, including Waiheke, Great Barrier, Stewart and Chatham islands.

This is beyond our control. Courier companies have been steadily reducing the size of items they will carry, particularly to rural addresses, and many of our products exceed these size limits.

What is a rural address?

All NZ Post “RD” addresses are rural, but our courier company also considers some other addresses to be rural. If you think you might be considered rural, please ask us before placing your order, or search for your address here.

If you are at a rural address

If you live at a rural address on the North Island or South Island, and want to purchase a larger item from us, please provide a non-rural address for delivery.

Cat posts over 1.5m tall require a non-rural address on the North Island or South Island. If you must have it shipped to a rural address, please contact us first and we will get a quote from a trucking company (it will be very expensive).

Since 2015, Cat Containment Systems (CATFENCE.NZ) has been helping cat owners keep their pets safe and happy at home, as the exclusive NZ distributor of the amazing Oscillot system.

We’re a small Auckland-based company that grew out of a hobby business breeding low-allergen Siberian cats for families that could otherwise not have a cat. We were the first in New Zealand to provide scientifically measured allergen levels for our kittens, and have always believed in using evidence to measure results.

Through our experience working with cat owners, we realised that the best way to keep cats safe from harm was to keep them on their own property.

Now, we’re thrilled to announce that we can help even more cats live happily ever after, with the introduction of Purrfect Fence to New Zealand.

Made in the USA, Purrfect Fence has been proven over 20 years of service in North America, the UK and Germany. Now, CATENCE.NZ is the first Purrfect Fence distributor in the southern hemisphere!

Over the past few months we’ve been working with the owners of Purrfect Fence and it’s become clear that we share the same philosophy – cats are our number one priority! We’ve been impressed by the level of customer service they provide and the customer support systems they use, which look very much like what we’ve been doing for the past 7+ years.

So, what is Purrfect Fence?

At first glance, you might think Purrfect Fence looks like other products you’ve seen, in that it mounts to the top of the fence and creates a physical barrier to your cat.

But we believe it’s a superior product, and here’s why:

Purrfect Fence uses incredibly strong poly mesh as a barrier. It’s actually used in deer fencing, and has a 600-pound (270kg) breaking strength!

The patented pivoting-arm design prevents your cat from climbing upside down to get up and over the inner edge of the mesh. As soon as the pivoting arm starts to swing downward, your cat re-orients itself (in order to land on its feet) and releases its grip.

Easy to install. There are no cables, wire clamps, turnbuckles or ropes. You attach the poly mesh directly to the arms and to your fence. Full instructions are provided, and we also have a comprehensive installation video that will help you plan your system, even with the trickiest fences.

Purrfect Fence has many other advantages, which we’ll talk about in future blog posts.

Our first shipment of Purrfect Fence is currently on its way to New Zealand. We’re accepting orders through our website, but delivery will be after mid April. We think it’s worth waiting for!

In the meantime, please refer to the Purrfect Fence section of catfence.nz, and contact us if you have any questions.
