We always say that you can install Oscillot® on just about any kind of fence.

The latest proof of that comes from Neil, a customer in Sunnylands, Auckland.

Neil had already had some success containing his cat by cladding the top of his fence with corrugated roofing iron. But then he found the cat had gotten out, apparently by taking a big jump and hooking her claws onto the top edge of the iron.

About a week ago, Neil installed Oscillot at the top of the roofing iron, carefully positioning our offset brackets in the valleys of the corrugation. It’s a neat looking installation in black to match the fence. He even added Oscillot to the garden shed that is next to the fence.

And the verdict?

“The escape artist has inspected it quite thoroughly and is fully unimpressed.”

Fences need to be in good shape before installing any cat fence system. Here's an example of work we have done to repair and adapt a fence.

When we advise people on how to contain their cats on their own property, we try to look at the entire situation from a cat’s point of view.

A good example was an installation we did last week in Auckland.

The first thing we noticed was that the fence was not straight in some areas. As well, some of the palings were missing, loose or had warped.

Our recommendation was that we first stabilise and straighten the fence, before installing the Oscillot cat fence system.

In the main photo (above), you can see some of what we did:

A: Replaced a missing paling in the corner.

B: Removed excess height from fence posts (which would have blocked the Oscillot system), and wrapped the posts in aluminium to prevent climbing.

C: Installed a new top rail around the entire perimeter to stiffen and straighten the fence, as well as providing a solid mounting surface for Oscillot.

Most New Zealand fences are timber and it’s common for them to need a little bit of repair. We’re happy to advise you on what’s required.

Jade sent us these photos yesterday and also posted this 5-star Google review:

The Oscillot fencing system has allowed us to let our four Ragdoll cats outside after many years of having them as indoor cats. The fence is effective, safe and looks great! Neil has been easy to deal with and very helpful with our queries. We highly recommend this system if you want your cats to experience the outdoors in a safe environment.

Thanks Jade and Peter. It’s a great-looking job and we’re thrilled that the cats are happy and safe.

You might be wondering: “Aren’t those gaps in the fence big enough to let a cat escape?”

Well, this installation had nothing to do with cats! Turns out Oscillot is good for other things besides keeping cats contained. 🙂

This was an interesting bit of cat-proofing we did recently for the owners of two cats who live in a central Auckland strata unit.

The challenge was to prevent their cats escaping through, or over, an aluminium fence. The fence was only 1.2m high and had large gaps.

The fence was also the only source of light into the courtyard, and the Body Corporate rules meant the fence could not be altered.

Clear acrylic was used to raise the height of this fence while still allowing natural light into the courtyard.

Our solution was to attach clear acrylic to the fence and gate, which increased the height to 2m. Oscillot paddles were attached at the top of the acrylic.

Now, there’s lots of light, less noise, and two happy cats. The neighbours are also happy not to have the cats roaming freely into their property.

A few days ago we did an interesting Oscillot installation in Millwater, north of Auckland.

This brand new row house had a fence built of aluminium posts with thin synthetic horizontal slats. We attached the Oscillot dual knuckle posts to the fence posts for stability, and added treated timber behind the Oscillot paddles to close the gaps where the cat might otherwise escape.

But what made this installation most interesting was the gate. As you can see from the photo above, there was a step down under the gate, which created a large (cat-size) gap. Because the gate opens inward, we had to come up with a clever solution, which involved a horizontal piece of 6mm thick clear acrylic. We attached the acrylic to the gate with three brackets, painted black to match the gate. Looks good, huh?

Here’s the rest of the installation:

Just wanted to tell you the Oscilot looks like a winner for my Burmese. It’s installed and I’ve had 3 days of testing and no escape. I’m so happy with it. Thank you!

Fleur’s Oscillot system is merino (beige), one of our standard colours. She had the system installed by her fence builder.

I found installing the paddles very simple and it was instant reaction with our little Molly. She tried immediately to jump over the gate/fence and was unable to get a grip. She hasn’t tried to get up that high ever since – so I haven’t been able to take any photos or video. It has made a huge difference for us without having to worry about her getting out of the property. Thanks heaps for your service.
– Garry, Thames
