Cats are wonderful companions, but it can be infuriating to come home and find your favourite sofa or armchair in tatters.

You may wonder why your cat is doing this and how to stop it. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind this behavior and provide some tips on how to prevent it.

Why do cats scratch furniture?

Scratching is a natural and instinctive behavior for cats. They scratch to stretch their muscles, mark their territory, and sharpen their claws. In the wild, cats scratch trees or other rough surfaces to remove the outer layer of their claws and keep them healthy. Indoor cats may not have access to suitable scratching surfaces, so they may resort to furniture, carpets, or curtains instead.

How to stop your cat from scratching furniture

There are several ways to prevent your cat from scratching furniture. Here are some tips to try:

1. Provide suitable scratching posts

Invest in a few scratching posts that are tall enough for your cat to stretch out and sturdy enough to withstand vigorous scratching. (We recommend Big & Strong cat climbing posts.) Place them in areas where your cat spends most of their time, and encourage them to use them by sprinkling catnip or treats on them.

2. Trim your cat’s claws

Regularly trimming your cat’s claws can help reduce the damage they can do to furniture. It is best to start this when they are kittens so they can get used to it. We trim our cats’ claws every three weeks. If you’re unsure how to do it, ask your veterinarian or a professional groomer for advice.

3. Deter your cat from scratching furniture

There are several ways to deter your cat from scratching furniture, including:

Applying double-sided tape or aluminium foil to the areas they scratch. Some cats don’t like the texture or sound of these materials and will avoid them.

Using a citrus-scented spray or a spray that contains a bittering agent, which will discourage your cat from scratching.

Placing a scratching post in front of the furniture they usually scratch.

4. Provide outdoor activities for your cat

Although some cats seem perfectly happy indoors, others will constantly remind their owners that they prefer the outdoor life.

Outdoor activities can be a great way to keep cats active and stimulated, which can help reduce their desire to scratch furniture. Consider installing a cat fence system to keep your cat safe and secure while they explore the outdoors.

Conclusion

Scratching is a natural behavior for cats, but it can be destructive to furniture. Providing your cat with appropriate scratching posts, trimming their claws, and using deterrents can help prevent this behavior. Additionally, providing outdoor activities for your cat can help reduce their desire to scratch furniture. With patience and persistence, you can train your cat to scratch appropriate surfaces only, and you’ll enjoy a harmonious relationship with your furry friend.

We can ship some small items (see list below) anywhere in New Zealand.

For larger items, we can only ship to non-rural addresses on the North Island or South Island. In other words we cannot ship larger items to rural addresses or to other islands, including Waiheke, Great Barrier, Stewart and Chatham islands.

What is a rural address?

All NZ Post “RD” addresses are rural, but our courier company also considers some other addresses to be rural. If you think you might be considered rural, please ask us before placing your order, or search for your address here.

If you are at a rural address

If you live at a rural address on the North Island or South Island, and want to purchase a larger item from us, please provide a non-rural address for delivery.

What this means for the various items we sell

Small items, such as fittings for cat fence systems, are shipped via CourierPost to all addresses (including small islands).

Cat posts up to 1.5m tall are shipped via CourierPost to all addresses on the North Island and South Island (not small islands).

Cat posts over 1.5m tall require a non-rural address on the North Island or South Island. If you must have it shipped to a rural address, please contact us first and we will get a quote from a trucking company (it will be very expensive).

We’ve just made some changes to our website and it’s now easier for you to get one of our hand-made cat climbing posts.

Instead of requesting a shipping quote before ordering, you can see the shipping cost as you place your order.

Plus it’s now easier to pay by credit card if you wish.

We have, unfortunately, had to increase our prices by about 10 per cent, due to the ongoing problems getting timber, plywood and MDF. (We’re also having to spend more time shopping for supplies and less time building posts.)

Please take a look at our range of big and strong posts. And if you have any feedback on our new ordering system, we’d love to hear it.

Exciting news for the big cats of New Zealand: today we unveiled a heavy duty cat climbing post designed to handle the feline heavyweights.

The Maxi-3 is based on our popular Mega-3 post, with the same large base and spacious platforms. But we’ve strengthened it to so that cats up to 10kg can enjoy climbing, stretching and scratching – without attacking your furniture.

Smaller cats love it too, as you can see from the photo above. Hoku and Felix were impatient for me to attach the base so they could start testing this new model in our kitchen (that’s their job around here).

So, what’s so special about the Maxi-3?

Testing going well on the new Maxi-3

Well, quite a few things:

The 3 platforms are 17mm thick plywood (our other posts use 12mm plywood) so they can handle more weight without sagging.

The attachment of the pole to the base is much more rigid, because of a larger attachment area created by buttressing the bottom of the pole. This means the pole will sway very little if a large cat jumps from other furniture onto the top platform.

The centre of gravity is lower than our other posts, because of the extra mass at the bottom of the pole, plus the platforms are set lower and the entire pole is 100mm shorter (1.8m instead of 1.9m). Another benefit: the slightly shorter pole means we can ship this heavier, beefier cat post for the same shipping charges as a Mega series post!

This really is a very solid post. It’s heavy, weighing about 26kg and we recommend having two people assemble and erect it.

Like all our cat climbing posts, the Maxi-3 is individually hand-made in Auckland using all-new materials: kiln-dried timber, plywood, MDF, carpet and manila rope. The base is painted before carpeting so it cannot absorb liquid.

The Maxi-3 can be ordered with a grey or beige pole. The platforms and base are grey.

We’re really proud of this addition to our lineup of quality cat posts. Here’s more information about it.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

We hope you and your ‘bubble’ are faring well during the COVID-19 lockdown.

So, we are unable to supply the Oscillot cat fence system or our cat climbing posts for the duration of the lockdown.

There are, however, a number of services that we are continuing to offer:
